The jack-of-all trades for your wedding day, and likely the girl that will be gushing over your big day just as much as you are.
Are you planning to elope in the Outer Banks? YAY! Outer Banks (OBX) is an absolutely incredible backdrop for elopements with its beaches, historic lighthouses, and charming coastal vibes. Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging your vows with your toes in the sand or next to the iconic lighthouses, there’s something for everyone here!
As a North Carolina elopement photographer, in this Outer Banks elopement guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know to plan your day in this breathtaking location. Let’s get into it!
Outer Banks is a dream destination for all couples who want an intimate, relaxed wedding day, especially with beach vibes. Often, you may think of California or Florida when imagining a beach elopement, but the Outer Banks is an AMAZING alternative.
There are endless beaches, dramatic dunes, and picturesque ocean views. But not only that, here you’ll also find charming villages and beach towns – there are so many places to visit and things to do! Plus, you can get as adventurous as you’d like to. From kayaking and kiteboarding to strolling along quaint coastal streets, there’s something for every vibe!
The Outer Banks is a great elopement destination all year round. Being next to the Gulf Stream, it is a bit cooler than other locations during the summers, and it’s also nice and warm during the winters. Overall, the best time of year for your elopement in OBX will depend on the kind of vibes you envision for your day.
Spring in the OBX is wonderful. The temperatures are rising, and flowers are blooming everywhere! The area comes back to life around Easter after slowing down during the off-season. By late spring, you can expect highs ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. While early mornings might still have a chill, the gentle ocean breeze, and the quiet beaches more than make up for it.
Summer in OBX brings in the crowds but also amazing beach weather as the temps soar into the 80s. This is the perfect season if you love long, sunny days and the lively beach town atmosphere.
But again, peak tourist season brings all the crowds, so consider a work day and sunrise ceremony to escape the busiest times. Also, book accommodations early to avoid summer price hikes and to be able to book a nice location in the first place.
Fall is arguably the best time of year for an Outer Banks elopement. The weather remains warm, hovering in the 70s in September and gradually cooling down as the season progresses. The summer crowds have thinned, and the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking.
With the crowds leaving, fall is a bit more affordable than summer, and you’ll have a better choice of accommodations. Plus, this is the best time for windsurfing and kiteboarding if you’re into that kind of thing!
Winter in the Outer Banks is quiet and peaceful. With cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to mid-50s, the beaches are nearly empty, offering a peaceful and intimate setting. It’s an ideal time for cozy beach house vibes and elopements that focus on just the two of you.
If you’re planning for a winter elopement somewhere nice and warm enough, this is THE place! Some local spots may be closed during the off-season, but there should still be plenty of places to visit!
Outer Banks is a treasure trove of breathtaking elopement locations, offering everything from pristine beaches to historic lighthouses. Whether you’re dreaming of a barefoot ceremony at the shore or maybe somewhere in sand dunes, there are plenty of options for you.
You’ll likely be looking for a place to stay in OBX when you’re planning your elopement here. Consider renting a beach house for your stay, especially if you’re planning to take a full vacation and are considering bringing some loved ones with you. The coastal-style homes with large windows, which let in natural light, are gorgeous for indoor photos as you’re getting ready. Having a nice Airbnb or VRBO is a good option for your elopement day in case of bad weather, too!
Look for homes that offer spacious decks with ocean views and maybe even direct beach access. There are plenty of options out there, but make sure you check all the reviews!
The Jockey Ridge State Park is home to the largest natural sand dunes on the East Coast, creating a unique and dramatic landscape for your elopement. The dunes’ golden hues during sunset are absolutely magical. Keep in mind that the sand can get hot during summer, so opt for early morning or evening ceremonies and bring plenty of water.
To inquire about your elopement permit, you’ll need to contact the park beforehand at jockeys.ridge@ncparks.gov
Just across the bridge from the Outer Banks, Manteo is a charming small town with cobblestone streets, cute shops, and a picturesque waterfront. The Elizabethan Gardens and Roanoke Island Festival Park are must-visit spots for stunning photos. There are also more than a dozen places to dine, as well as a brewery and rum distillery. There is so much to see and do, and it’s a beautiful, historic, and quaint elopement destination.
Depending on your chosen OBX elopement location, you will need to get an elopement or special use permit. While I mentioned them above as well, here is an overview for you!
