The jack-of-all trades for your wedding day, and likely the girl that will be gushing over your big day just as much as you are.
The weather is one of the few things we cannot control on your elopement day. And while a rainy forecast might not be what you were envisioning when you first pictured your I do’s in Shenandoah or somewhere equally stunning, it does not mean your day is ruined. In fact, some of the most romantic and intimate elopements I’ve ever photographed happened under a cloudy, moody sky or in a soft drizzle.
So, let’s talk about how to prepare for rain on your elopement day, so you feel calm, confident, and ready to enjoy your experience no matter what Mother Nature decides to do.
The first step to being ready for anything is understanding what “anything” might mean. Every location has its quirks when it comes to weather. For example, if you’re choosing Shenandoah National Park during spring, you might see rain and fog and golden hour sun all in one day, while during summers you may get evening thunderstorms.
That’s why I always encourage my couples to really think about the time of year they’re eloping and what the typical climate is like. I help with this too when we are deciding on your elopement location. Some trails just aren’t safe (or accessible) when it rains, while others are still doable with the right preparations. I’ll help guide you toward locations that will still photograph beautifully and feel safe even if the weather turns.
I’ll say this louder for the people in the back: the weather doesn’t define your elopement day! At the end of the day, you’re marrying your person, and that is what it’s all about. Whether it’s misty and moody or sunny and warm, it’s about the two of you and not the weather.
So, if the weather forecast looks grim, remind yourself, “This is still going to be an AMAZING day!”
This is where my background in event planning really comes in handy. Together, we’ll create a flexible timeline and backup plan (or two!) just in case we need to shift things around due to rain or any other reason.
That might mean a more covered ceremony location, a change in the hiking route, or even shifting your portraits to a drier part of the day. Trust me—I’m always watching the radar so you don’t have to.

There’s a saying I love: “There’s no bad weather—just the wrong gear.” If rain is even slightly possible, it’s worth packing a few essentials to keep you dry and happy:
Here’s a full guide on what to pack for your Shenandoah elopement. However, I send my couples a packing list so they know exactly what to bring, and I’ll always remind them to pack the stuff they might forget!
